PM Modi Proposes, Bank Disposes

Letter - Twitter 1-page-001Letter - Twitter-page-001

With a heavy heart, I’m airing my grievances here. I, KS Kalyanasundaram, am a first-generation entrepreneur with proven past experience and track record of working with HMV, Times of India, MTV, Disney, ZEE, Sahara and B4U for more than 25 years. To launch my entrepreneur dream, I left my lucrative position to start a music channel, Whistle TV, which would have been India’s first dedicated Fully HD music channel.

Last year, I had applied and received a sanction for a loan from the Bank of India. I had to offer my own flat, which I got from my father as, collateral. Bank of India, as a professional bank, did all the due diligence, conducted internal TEV, took my interviews several times, and finally sanctioned the loan. Having got the sanction, I invested all my savings, to the tune of Rs 7 crores, into setting up of the channel. The channel has already gone on air (it can be downloaded at frequency 3725h2666 and viewed at http://www.whistletv.in) and we started incurring huge expenses on the project. As we had received license from the Ministry of I&B, we had to pay a hefty amount to uplink the channel. We had to do this as the bank said it would disburse the loan only after the license was obtained.

However, when we approached the bank for disbursement with the license in hand, we were told that due to mismatch in bank’s Capital Adequacy Ratio, we would have to wait till September 2015. When we next approached the bank, we were told that the loan disbursement would not be possible!!! And this time there was no reason offered!!!

This came as an absolute shocker to us.

How can a bank approve of the loan, make the entrepreneur invest heavily in the venture, and then back off citing internal policies? This amounts to not only the killing of the business but also the spirit of entrepreneurship.

While our honorable Prime Minister Shri Modiji is promoting Make in India and Ease of Doing Business, the Government of India officials are being the biggest roadblock to this vision.

This is a typical instance of ground reality at the grassroots level that threatens to derail the Make in India vision of the PM, and an example of bureaucratic hurdle thrown in the way of an aspiring entrepreneur.

I have attached all the correspondence and documentation from the bank in this blog. I hope to bring to light the malpractices of a bank that is damaging not only to businesses but to the entrepreneurial spirit of the country.

Jai Hind

  1. “NO MAN TO CONVERT DREAMS INTO REALITY” How can a country like India the largest democracy and one of the largest economies afford to survive on dreams. Where the leaders share an undebatable philosophy to run the nation but on the ground reality its people like farmers, shopkeepers, traders, businessmen and startup entrepreneurs dating psychologists or suicide. The reason is SIMPLY the COMPLICATED bureaucracy. The above post is one more end to start this debate…

  9. Dear Kalyansundaram, it’s sad that you have to face the loan disbursement problem. I think it is not right to link this problem with PM or his Make-In-India plan which is primarily aimed at attracting FDI for setting up manufacturing base in India. Apparently, such entities are not supposed to be dependent on Indian banks. In general banks, in India, work as per the whims of their officers so much so that, in many instances, even RBI rules or guidelines are thrown to dust bin b/c generally customers do care to verify them. So, largely, the attitude of the bank will depend on what kind of personal relationship or equation you have with the concerned officers. Corruption may or may not be an integral part of the process, necessarily.

I wish you had got disbursed the loan before making all your investment. If the loan happens to be crores, it is better to involve some CA/consultant. I hope you must have done that.

Whatever be the case, I just want to convey you that the kind of difficulty you are facing is a routine scenario since decades and there is no change with Modi becoming PM. And it is not right to relate with PM b/c all these institutions are working independently. The RBI governor or even the govt. cannot force banks to pass on the rate cut benefits to their customers. It may happen that if you pursue your case (as you are doing), you may find some help from some quarter and your problem may be solved. But this is not going to be the norm for others. If you are right and you fight and if you are lucky you win and that’s over. When some other right person faces the same problem, he has to fight his battle in his own way.

The same situation is there in all other services : telecom, internet, electricity, railways, govt services and so on.

If you have proper links, you may not face such problems or you may find quick solutions to them but ordinary (common) man has to face these things. They have to find ways and means to ‘manage’ them in their own way on their own. Good luck to you. Better get some venture capital and go ahead with your stuck up project.

    With best wishes,

    GD Jasuja
